Population
These are greater flamingo birds that are found at the L.A. Zoo.
They show population because they live in a small area at the same time.
Population is a group of one species that interbreed and live in the same place at the same time.
exoskeleton
These are crickets that were found at the L.A zoo.
They have exoskeletons since they are bugs.
An exoskeleton is a skeleton outside of the body.
pollinator
This is a butterfly and it was found at the L.A. Zoo.
The butterfly pollinates different flowers on its search of nectar.
A pollinator is an agent that moves pollen from the male anthers to the female stigma
adaptation in an animal
This is a giraffe that was found in the L.A. Zoo.
The giraffe had to adapt to it's environment by growing an extra long neck to reach leaves on high trees.
An adaptation in an animal is a trait that is developed over time to ensure its survival.
Altruistic behavior
These are chimpanzees are in the L.A. Zoo.
They show altruistic behavior by helping each other.
Altruistic behavior is when an organism does something to help another.
K- strategist
This is a lion/ that was found in the L.A. Zoo.
A lion is a K - strategist because it can compete for limited resources. Also its body mass is large and the mothers only have a few offspring.
A k- strategist is an animal that can compete for limited resources and typically have few offspring.
Adaptation in a plant
The rose has adapted to it's environment by growing thorns on its stems to stop animal from eating the plant.
An adaptation in a plant is a trait that is developed over time by a plant that contributes to its survival.
CAM plant
This is a cactus that was found at the L.A. Zoo
This cactus is a CAM plant due to the fact that it lives in an arid environment.
xylem
This is a palm tree found at the L.A. Zoo.
Palm trees contain xylem in their trunks to transport water in the tree.
Xylem is one of two types of transport tissue that transports water.
keystone species
This is a fig tree found at the L.A. Zoo.
The fig tree is a keystone species by that the figs it drops help fertilize the ground and give food to animals.
A keystone species is one whose impact on its community or ecosystem is disproportionately large relative to its abundance
Anther and filament of a stamen
This flower was found in the L.A. Zoo.
The plant uses it's stamen to produce pollen.
The stamen is the male part of a flower. it is made up of two parts: the anther, the pollen bearing part, and the filament, the stalk of the stamen.
Dicot plant with flower and leaf.
This plant was found at the L.A. Zoo.
This plant is a dicot plant because it has 5 petals on the flower.
Dicot plants are a group of flowering plants belonging to the class Magnoliopsida of Angiospermae (angiosperms), characterized by having two photosynthetic cotyledons in the seed that may emerge from the ground when the seed germinates
C4 plant
This is a corn plant that was found in a city garden.
The corn plant is a C4 plant because of the plants ability to live in areas of high drought and intense sunlight.
A C4 plant is a plant that utilizes the C4 carbon fixation pathway in which the CO2 is first bound to a phosphoenolpyruvate in mesophyll cell resulting in the formation of four-carbon compound (oxaloacetate) that is shuttled to the bundle sheath cell where it will be decarboxylated to liberate the CO2 to be utilized in the C3 pathway.
Amniotic egg
This is a chicken egg that was found in my fridge.
A chicken egg is an amniotic egg because it was produced by a bird. Also inside the egg there is an embryo and the embryo is surrounded by amniotic fluid.
An amniotic egg is a type of egg produced by reptiles, birds, and egg laying mammals.
C3 plant
This is grass found at the L.A. Zoo.
Grass is a c3 plant due to where it can survive, high co2 concentration. moderate heat, and moderate sunlight
homologous structures
The picture on the left is a picture of my hand and the picture on the right is a picture of a Gharial.
Both my hand and the hands/feet of the Gharial have similar structures.
Homologous structures may not necessarily perform the same function but they share a common ancestral origin. Homologous structure share the same structure.
Littoral zone organism.
This is a turtle found at the L.A. Zoo.
The turtle lives in the area near water and land, also called the littoral zone.
The littoral zone is the part of a sea, lake or river that is close to the shore. The organisms that live there vary from turtles to small fish.
Analogous structures.
The picture on the left is of my leg and the picture on the right is of a snow leopard from the L.A. Zoo.
My leg allows me to walk and so does the leg of the leopard.
Analogous structures are structures that are similar in function, but they are not from a common structure.
r - strategist
These are frogs that were found in Petco.
Frogs are r - strategists because they can reproduce very rapidly. This is because of a change in environment.
In unstable or unpredictable environments, r-selection predominates as the ability to reproduce quickly is crucial. There is little advantage in adaptations that permit successful competition with other organisms, because the environment is likely to change again. Traits that are thought to be characteristic of r-selection include: high fecundity, small body size, early maturity onset, short generation time, and the ability to disperse offspring widely.
Territorial behavior
This is a tiger at the L.A. Zoo.
The tiger displays his territory as he goes goes on the prowl.
Territorial behavior is when an animal makes an area and protects it. The reasons vary from animal to animal.
Detritivore
These Mushrooms were found in Costco.
Mushrooms break down the waste of other plants and animals. Also they eat dead organisms.
are heterotrophs that obtain nutrients by consuming detritus (decomposing plant and animal parts as well as organic fecal matter). By doing so, they contribute to decomposition and the nutrient cycles. They should be distinguished from other decomposers, such as many species of bacteria, fungi and protists, which are unable to ingest discrete lumps of matter, but instead live by and metabolizing on a molecular scale. However, the terms detritivore and decomposer are often used interchangeably.
protostome
These are worms that were found at petco.
Worms have a mouth at the front of their body.
Protostomia (from Greek meaning "mouth first") are a clade of animals. Together with the deuterostomes and a few smaller phyla, they make up the Bilateria, mostly comprising animals with bilateral symmetry and three germ layers. The major distinctions between deuterostomes and protostomes are found in embryonic development.
Niche
These are Asian elephants found at the L.A. Zoo.
Elephants knock down trees and clear areas for other animals.
A niche the position or function of an organism in a community of plants and animals.
epithelial tissue
This is a picture of my wrist.
All my skin is epithelial tissue.
Epithelial tissues line the cavities and surfaces of structures throughout the body, and also form many glands. Functions of epithelial cells include secretion, selective absorption, protection, transcellular transport and detection of sensation.
Vascular plant
This is a flowering plant found at the L.A. Zoo.
This plant is a vascular plant because of it's ability to move water within its lignified tissues.
Vascular plants are those plants that have lignified tissues for conducting water, minerals, and photosynthetic products through the plant.
